Calculate Cubic Yards

Not every bed or pad is a rectangle. Choose the shape of your area, enter its dimensions and depth, and get the volume in cubic yards and cubic metres.

What does this tool do?

This tool calculates cubic yards for the three shapes that cover almost any landscaping or concrete job: rectangles, circles (tree rings, round patios) and triangles (corner beds).

How does it work?

It finds the area of the chosen shape, multiplies by depth in feet and the number of identical areas, and divides by 27. For simple rectangles you can also use the Cubic Yard Calculator, which adds a waste allowance.

What information is needed?

  • The shape of the area
  • Its dimensions in feet
  • Depth in inches

How to use the Calculate Cubic Yards

  1. Choose the shape.
  2. Enter the dimensions that appear for that shape.
  3. Enter depth and the number of identical areas.
  4. Select Calculate.

The formula

In plain terms, here is the calculation the tool runs:

Rectangle: A = L × W
Circle: A = π × (D ÷ 2)²
Triangle: A = B × H ÷ 2
Cubic yards = A × (Depth ÷ 12) × Qty ÷ 27
D
Diameter in feet
B, H
Triangle base and height in feet

Worked example

Example

A 20 × 10 ft garden bed filled 6" deep with topsoil.

  1. 20 × 10 = 200 sq ft
  2. 200 × 0.5 = 100 cu ft
  3. 100 ÷ 27 = 3.70 cu yd

About 3.7 cubic yards — order 4.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure an irregular bed?

Break it into simple shapes, run each one here, and add the results.

How much does a cubic yard of gravel weigh?

Roughly 1.4 tons, though it varies with stone size and moisture.

Cubic yards or cubic metres?

The result shows both. One cubic yard is 0.7646 m³.
